The 2026 World Cup is one of the most scam-targeted ticketing events in history. Hundreds of millions of fans want tickets. Scammers exploit that desperation with fake listings and fraudulent websites. Here is how to protect yourself.
THE SCALE OF THE RISK
FIFA has explicitly warned fans about fake ticketing websites and resale scams. With 500 million ticket requests made through official channels, the demand is publicly known. Scammers create fake FIFA-lookalike websites, fake StubHub listings and fake social media sales to exploit fans who cannot secure legitimate FIFA 2026 Tickets.
HOW TO IDENTIFY A LEGITIMATE TICKET
A legitimate 2026 World Cup ticket is digital. It exists in the FIFA app. It is tied to a FIFA ID. It cannot be printed on paper. There are no physical tickets. If someone offers you a printed PDF ticket or a screenshot of a ticket, it is fake.
The only way to verify you have a real ticket is to see it appear in your FIFA account after a proper purchase or official transfer through FIFA.com/tickets.
RED FLAGS
Price far below market value: If a ticket to the USA vs. Paraguay game costs $100 from a stranger, it is a scam. Current face value is over $1,000 and secondary market prices are higher.
Payment by wire transfer: No legitimate ticket platform asks you to wire money. This is the number one payment method used in scams because it is irreversible.
Cryptocurrency payment only: Another sign of a scam. Legitimate platforms accept credit cards with buyer protection.
New or unverified website: Check the site's age and reviews. FIFA.com was not created last week. A ticketing site with a domain registered in 2025 for the specific purpose of selling World Cup tickets to strangers is very likely fraudulent.
Social media sellers: Individuals on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or WhatsApp selling tickets are high-risk. Even if they appear to have positive reviews, the risk is significant.
Pressure tactics: "Only 2 left, buy now before they're gone" messaging designed to stop you thinking clearly.
SAFE BUYING CHECKLIST
Before purchasing from any platform:
1. Is it FIFA.com/tickets? Then it is safe.
2. Is it On Location? Then it is safe.
3. Is it StubHub, SeatGeek, VividSeats or TickPick? Then it has buyer protection. Use it carefully.
4. Does it have a clear buyer guarantee? Confirm before purchasing.
5. Does it show a specific section and seat? Required for legitimacy on resale.
6. Does it accept credit card with chargeback rights? Required for protection.
IF YOU SUSPECT FRAUD
Contact your credit card company immediately if you have paid and suspect a scam. Credit card chargebacks are your primary protection. Do not use debit cards, wire transfers or irreversible payment methods for ticket purchases.
Report fake sites to FIFA via FIFA.com and to the platform where you saw the listing.
